Because too many good men don’t make it.
Every day in Australia, seven men take their own lives - and most of them never told anyone they were struggling. They went to work, cracked jokes with their mates, kept food on the table for their families, and did what they thought they were supposed to do - until the weight of it all became too much to carry in silence.
Walk ‘n’ Talk was born out of that silence - out of the ache of losing good people, and out of the quiet knowing that sometimes all it takes to keep going is someone walking beside you when the world feels too hard.
We don’t believe support has to start with a clipboard or a waiting room. Sometimes it starts with lacing up your boots, taking a walk in the fresh air, and knowing that the person next to you isn’t expecting anything- just that you turn up and take the next step together.
We walk for the dads who are falling apart behind the scenes but still showing up for their kids. We walk for the young blokes who feel like they don’t belong anywhere. We walk for the men who are angry, grieving, lost, or numb - and have no idea what to do with any of it.
This isn’t a service you need a referral for. You don’t need to be fixed or figured out. You just need a place where you can breathe, speak freely (or not at all), and know you’re not alone.
That’s what Walk ‘n’ Talk is. And we’ll keep walking until every man in our community knows there’s someone who’s got his back.
Why we exist
Men are still dying in silence. The numbers haven’t shifted much. The stigma’s still there. And out here in regional Queensland, the support isn’t always easy to find.
7 of the 9 Australians
7 of the 9 Australians who die by suicide each day are men.
3 times more likely
Men are three times more likely to take their own lives than women.
Only 27% of men
Only 27% of men living with a mental health condition reach out for help.
More than 2x
In rural areas, the suicide rate is more than double what it is in the city.
50% of suicide
50% of suicide for males are due to situational distress
75% of male suicide attempts
are not linked to a mental health issue
Less likely
less likely to have health diagnosis
71% of male suicides
71% of male suicides are first attempts
Suicide is the leading cause of death for males
under the age of 55 and account for 3 out of 4 deaths
Twice the risk
Men who lack close friends have twice the risk of suicidal thoughts
6x the risk of depression
Separated men have 6x the risk of depression
Men not in the workforce
Men not in the workforce have 4x the risk of depression
We exist because those numbers aren’t just stats - they’re mates we’ve lost, brothers we couldn’t save, and sons who never got the chance to grow old.
We don’t need more empty campaigns.
We need real action, and that starts with walking beside each other, one conversation at a time.
